How
the Star*Chip works
The vehicle's electronic
control unit (ECU) calculates the engine's fuel and ignition
requirements from: rpm, airflow, manifold air pressure,
water and air temperature and oxygen level in the exhaust
gases. Data is collected from sensors placed around the
engine and connected directly to the ECU enabling it to
process this information instantly.
Star*Chip software is programmed to enhance the fuel and
ignition calibration in the ECU (the 'maps'), effectively
retrieving power lost through the manufacturer's settings
which are conservatively adjusted to take into consideration
poor quality fuel, irregular servicing and urban cycle fuel
consumption testing.
Development
Star*Chip is the product
of years of continual development and exhaustive testing.
De-tuned production engines are made to work more efficiently,
tapping the hidden reserves of power which exist within
them all.
It takes very special
skills.
As technicians and engineers,
we meticulously reprogramme electronics and, where necessary,
subtly rework mechanical components, testing again and again
in our workshops and on the road until we are satisfied
with the results. Software for the ignition timing and fuel
delivery curves, contained within the chip, is optimised
on our dynamometer. Overall
power increases in the order of 7-12% are possible, equating
to improvements on the road of around 0.4 - 0.9secs to 62mph
(0 to 100kph). This is often accompanied by improved fuel
consumption of 2 or 3 mpg - particularly noticeable when
cruising.
The Star*Chip range has
taken many years to evolve and refine, resulting in a fully
developed product that is totally suited to the vehicle.
They are designed to improve driveability of the vehicles
to which they are fitted without destroying reliability
or other desirable characteristics such as efficient fuel
usage, stable idle, servicing specifications etc.
Re-mapping takes place
throughout the range so that improvements are evident, even
on partial throttle openings. Fifth wheel testing has shown
a reduction of 10% in acceleration times on a 3.6 litre
911 Porsche and 3.5 BMW (power figures vary from vehicle
to vehicle).
The resultant effect of
a Star*Chip is to make the vehicle feel more responsive,
at any throttle position, with greater vitality on the road
- especially in the mid-range - and no special instructions
are required when the vehicle is being serviced.

Application list
Installation
This is quick and easy for
most models but some will require soldering. Comprehensive
fitting instructions are provided with each Star*Chip but
if DIY is not your strong point, either BBR or one of our
carefully chosen fitting agents can fit it for you for a
small fee.
To explain the procedure: First
locate the vehicle's ECU and remove it from the car, detaching
from the wiring loom by unclipping the multipin connector.
Then remove the cover, locate the chip to be changed and
replace with the Star*Chip. The original chip should be
retained if you ever wish to convert the vehicle back to
standard.
Ordering
information
To identify the correct
Star*Chip for your vehicle we need you to provide as much
of the following information as possible at the time of
placing your order:
- Make of vehicle.
- Exact model type.
- Year of manufacture.
- Manual or automatic.
- Air conditioning fitted or not.
- Part no. of ECU and manufacturers
original "chip". (If you cannot find this
out, contact us for assistance).
Please
note
Star*Chips are available
for most European vehicles fitted with electronic engine
management systems. New vehicles which do not have re-programmable
'chips can be fitted with the BBR's Interceptor
2000 - click for details if your car is not on the Star*Chip
list.
Star*Chip are designed
for standard specification vehicles. If you have any non-standard
engine parts such as exhaust, induction system (air filter),
cams, fuel system (power-boost valve) then please call us
before placing your order. We will advise which Star*Chips
are compatible with your vehicle (and their prices if they
differ from list price) and if there is no off-the-shelf
solution we can manufacture a Star*Chip tuned especially
for your car!
Should your vehicle be
fitted with a turbocharged engine then we have a range of
Re-boost Conversions to suit these models (please ask for
leaflet). The power and torque increase can be massive,
at a very affordable cost.
