BMW Conversions.
The directors of BBR
have had a long association with BMW cars. From as far
back as the late sixties, Ken was building 2 litre race
engines for sports racing cars and achieved many wins
in those days. Again in the mid-seventies, Ken built
the British Touring Car Championship winning engines and
all the engines for the BMW County Championships.
In latter years, many projects have been undertaken involving
various BMW models. Currently, David is Chairman
of the BMW M-Power Club GB and the companies' facilities
are often used for their gatherings.
Many hours have been
spent tuning various BMW engines on the dynamometer and
not so long ago, we took a 4 litre V8, turned it into
a race motor, dry sumping and fitting lightweight pistons,
rods etc and twin turbochargers. The turbo's were
restricted but the engine still managed to produce an
awesome 800 horsepower and 750 lbs ft of torque!
Also, in recent years,
a very large range of Star*Chips
have been produced and thousands have been fitted to BMW's
all around the world. During this time, BMW had
exclusively used Bosch electronics and were early users
of Bosch systems. In the seventies, the electronic systems
were all analogue and dynamometer tuning involved changing
resistors and capacitors to alter fuel slopes and ignition
patterns. How things have changed! Nowadays, BMW's
are fitted with either Bosch or Siemens systems and the
flash memory chips are surface mounted. To modify
these, we reprogramme the ECU's memory directly through
the vehicles diagnostic port. This enables us to change
any or all of the ECU's software without even removing
the ECU unit! We modify the software as is required to
achieve the best possible power increases.
