BBR MINI COOPER S PHASE 5 - BBR COOPER TURBO 300

Last year we decided, as there were serious limitations with over speeding the original Cooper S supercharger and although our big supercharger Cooper S conversion was sensational, it would take turbo charging to get big sustainable power from the S engine! So we bought a new Cooper S just to turbo charge, then a few weeks later a client called saying that he wanted ‘the fastest Cooper S in the land’, enter Clive from Bournemouth with his Cooper S.

We were already quite advanced in the turbo system configurations and after offering up countless system alternatives, we settled on the only real layout that would achieve all the requirements of a high boost turbo-layout, see picture.THE AMAZING BBR TURBO 300 (click to enlarge)

The engine was stripped and rebuilt with our big valve, BBR cam and ported cylinder head, mounted on the BBR in house dyno, then run-in, mapped and power tested. With the engine on the dyno, the chassis modifications took place. Transmission was fitted with our limited slip diff, BBR power grip suspension added plus our big brake conversion.

After dyno testing, the engine was reinstalled into the chassis, we fabricated the turbo layout. Comprising: top radiator mounted intercooler assy and top mounted air intake system, which replaced the original location of the top mounted original intercooler. This gives a sensational cold air intake stream. Oh and of course we retained the Climate control too! The mechanics of the conversion were completed by installation of our BBR high flow fuel delivery system and injectors. All in all it’s a very neat and tidy lay-out.

To finish it was then a simple matter of extensive on road (real time) mapping to suit all conditions of road use. With the huge power this conversion provides with the smallest of throttle openings this car would just take off!! To make this beast derivable on lower throttle openings we needed a rethink.

The finished conversion offers 3 stage boost control automatically switched by throttle position and load. This stopped the beast launching itself to the moon with light throttle openings, making it a very civil and progressive car to drive through towns, villages and our narrow English country lanes.

Turbo boost is available from as low as 2200rpm, when on the open road, with full load throttle openings a full 30psi (2bar+) of boost is unleashed from 3500rpm right up to and beyond 7000rpm. Guys were talking quick and quite possibly the fastest FWD 1600cc car in existence..!

Max Power is now revised 307BHP @ 6550RPM with 313lbs ft of torque @ 5000PRM.
