Research
& Development
Whilst we'll tackle anything
(especially projects that other folk can't do), our
real strengths lie in the areas of diesel and petrol engine
development and associated electronic control systems.
Much
of the activity centres around our in-house Superflow
SF-7100 dynamometer. This is a computer controlled water
brake dyno. capable of absorbing 1000 lbs ft. of torque
and having an upper limit of 14,000 RPM. It is a superb
machine for the type of work that we do and since we installed
it, we've added to its standard capabilities considerably.
It is now a highly accurate measuring tool and there isn't
much that goes on in an engine - or comes out of it - that
we cannot monitor, record and analyse.
Our 5 gas analyser with
data logging capability enables us to carry out emissions
testing and rectification whether for OE applications or
for the tuning industry. In fact we won a SMART award from
the Department of Trade and Industry for research into new
methods of controlling emissions from diesel engines. We
are currently working on a government funded F.U.S.E. project
which will see BBR at the leading edge of infinitely.
A
significant part of our work involves mapping and calibration
of engines using electronic engine management systems (also
known as EMS or ECU). Our engine test facilities are second
to none and are used by manufacturers for specialized projects.
We can test road car engines using manufacturers EMS equipment
and also have the facility to run almost any after market
or competition system on an engine. We doubt that anyone
else in the UK has anywhere near our depth of knowledge
and experience with so many different types of systems.
The team at BBR, have
been active in the field of electronic engine controls since
1983, creating an unrivalled knowledge base from which to
work. We are familiar with most of the competition engine
management and data logging systems in current use, having
used them ‘in anger’on many customer projects. We have also
designed and manufactured our own systems where no suitable
alternative is available. This gives us a unique position
within the industry - we are able to offer advice on assessing
the right system for your needs, we can then apply that
solution in an effective manner. This service can be offered
for all applications from road vehicles to the highest levels
of international motorsport. We do not specialize in any
one engine type and have become expert at adapting engines
with our comprehensive facilities. Our breadth of experience
means we are equally at home in an R&D, production or
track-side environment.
Our service also extends
to troubleshooting existing installations and projects.
Here, we have been able to find useful gains in many supposedly
optimal systems.
Our expertise is not just
limited to engines however. We also design and manufacture
special purpose control systems and we are able to bring
our own experience to bear on any application. Although
best known for our own tuning products, we have for many
years worked behind the scenes on other successful and prestigious
products.
We also operate as electronics
and software consultants as we have wide ranging experience
in all types of application, from PCB design and layout,
to real time control of special purpose equipment using
high level languages.
